Focus {Ramon Masats}

Ramon Masats 1Ramón-Masats

Since I’m off to Spain next week- HUGE SMILE HERE : ), our {Focus} feature is Spanish photographer Ramon Masats, one of the great names in Spanish photography. Ramon Masats was born in 1931 in Barcelona and took an interest in photography in his early 20′s when he came across an art magazine called “Arte Fotografico.” He says he had always had a fondness for doing something creative and had previously tried his hands at drawing but felt he wasn’t any good at it. Photography became his perfect expression and he took to it quickly with the purchase of his first camera and a steady pursuit of snapping around the region capturing the landscape, festivals and cultural events of Spain. Ramon Masats is wonderfully talented in documentary and storytelling style. His fist exhibition as an amateur was in 1955/1956 which was very well received and in 1957 he moved to Madrid to become a professional. Over the course of his long career, Masats has made many unforgettable photographs of daily life in Spain and Spanish landscape. His images are direct and poetic and I love the graphic style of his work. Masats only uses analogue film cameras still to this day. He shoots on Leica, Nikon and Hasselblad. Digital does not worry him and he prefers to just shoot for fun now, enjoying the simplicity of the original craft.

Hello there. Hello Spring. This is my view from here lately. Full of trees, leaves and papaya for breakfast. Quiet with sudden busts of craziness. A house full of kids, a pool party, school trips, the park, loads of laundry, spring cleaning, a cleared desk, a new office, fish tacos, ice cream sundays and iron man three. What is your view lately?

Lovely links: Today my fellow expat friend and L.A. girl, Ana Maria, launched her innovative design RING COZY. Be sure to check it out over at Anamu blog and get the details of her project on Kickstarter.  And speaking of papaya for breakfast, you must try this illuminating face mask from another L.A. home girl, Stephanie, over at CaliZona Lifestyle blog. Cheers ladies!

Viva Espana!

I’m off to Spain in a couple of weeks so I thought some pics from the last time I was there would be fun. A long time ago! This is 35mm kodak film and it has that grainy vintage feel that I still really do love the look of. The picture of my friend Sarah is crisp and vibrant though, with her beautiful piercing blue eyes. And I find the colours and sunlit terraces still give a hint of Spanish style. I’m excited to visit again with my new camera and for the chance to make new pictures. Viva Espana!

I had to throw that one in ; ) they're from France but who cares with that Andalucian beat and impossibly retro video- love it]

Piccolo

Piccolo portrait by Tanya MossPortrait by Tanya Moss When I first moved overseas I had little ones in tow. I was learning the ropes of being a new mom whilst navigating a different country and setting up new homes along the way for our travelling tribe. My camera fell by the way side for long periods of time I remember, as I was consumed with life in a different form. It was sometime during my awesome baby group when I picked up the camera again and resumed a bit of photography. I had met so many lovely expat moms from all over the world and we would gather and share our global, nomadic friendship and parenting savvy at various meet ups. At one point I started bringing my camera along and photographing the kids in our playgroup. My little portraiture venture {Piccolo} was formed from here. A small business in 35mm film and natural light. It’s been a while since any commissions as I closed up shop when we moved to New York. I am thinking of re-establishing this project as I so enjoy working with children and capturing their little free spirits. I’m currently putting together a portfolio but was not considering including my work from {Piccolo} for reasons being that I want to focus more on digital, journalistic and travel photography. I have decided however to include a little bit of {Piccolo} here on the blog. Here’s my first batch. Let me know what you think? Is portraiture appealing to you? Is portraiture a viable service?

Nikoi Island

    missismoss.comNikoi driftwood by Tanya Moss

My husband and I have never had a honeymoon nor a babymoon but if there is such a thing as a familymoon then we have certainly just experienced it. Last week we went to Nikoi Island, a small privately owned resort island in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia. It was the perfect island getaway and within an easy travel from Singapore. What a beautiful magical island! We lazed our days around swimming, sailing, snorkelling and chilling out in our sweet beach house made of drift wood and palms overlooking the sea. We felt worlds away. The kids absolutely loved it and we all came back feeling so relaxed and happy. It was difficult to choose just a few photos for this post, I took so many! See my Instagram feed for some of my iphone snaps from the trip.
